Clinical Laboratory Assistant - Waukesha

ProHealth Care offers a system-wide laboratory operation with core hospital labs at Waukesha Memorial and Oconomowoc Memorial as well as two clinic-based laboratory sites in Waukesha County and performs over 8 million tests annually.
Our Lab services operate out of state of the art facilities and include clinical testing in the areas of Histology, Cytology, Hematology, Coagulation, Clinical Chemistry, Urinalysis, Immunoassay, Microbiology, Transfusion service, EIA, and Molecular Biology.

ProHealth Care offers a vibrant outreach program, providing laboratory testing to numerous specialty hospitals, physician offices, and nursing home facilities.  We have PhDs on site who work closely with lab employees to monitor quality, identify, access, and implement new technology.   The Laboratory has certification and accreditation through the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Joint Commission (JCAHO), American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA).

 

Hours: Monday through Friday 11:00am to 7:30pm with rotating on-call Saturday from 0800-1200.

Clinical Laboratory Assistant - Anatomic Pathology

The Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) is responsible for accurate and efficient receipt, processing and distribution of specimens from inpatients, outpatients and outside clients.  Maintains proficiency of the Laboratory Information System.  Acts as a liaison between the laboratory and nurses or other healthcare providers.  Must have the ability to work at various PHC Lab locations as needed.

 

  • Performs all specimen processing functions to ensure accurate and timely receipt and prompt distribution of specimens to the appropriate departments following established policies and procedures.
  • Prioritizes specimens appropriately, responding to STAT specimen requests in a timely manner and flagging these specimens for prompt attention by the technical laboratory staff.
  • Assist in specimen collection as needed
  • Participates in readiness for regulatory compliance with all applicable agencies (JC, CAP, AABB, etc.) and ensures operational compliance within regulatory standards.
  • Labels specimens accurately in accordance with established laboratory policies and procedures
  • Responsible for loading specimens on analyzers in the department as needed..
  • Performs instrument maintenance in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Maintains accessibility of reference material related to specimen requirements for tests performed by reference laboratories.
  • Maintains a consistently pleasant telephone demeanor when responding to all client calls, questions or inquiries.  Utilizes tact and discretion in client interactions.
  • Maintains proficiency of laboratory information system in response to client inquiries and requests requiring order entry or cancellation of tests.  Responds to inquiries:  test results, turn around time, normal ranges, specimen requirements, collection instructions, and methodology.
  • Interacts with other hospital departments and nursing units to address patient specimen concerns timely.  Takes appropriate action to communicate insufficient or unacceptable specimens with clients.
  • Refers technical inquiries to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintains processing supply inventory as needed, monitoring expiration dates and ordering, if required.
  • Plans and organizes workflow relative to specimen priorities to support consistent and appropriate processes to meet clinical needs and assure customer satisfaction.
  • Completes documentation appropriately.
  • Assumes personal responsibility for continuing education and professional development.
  • Completes competencies required in assigned areas.
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures, including assuring a culture of patient safety in accordance with ProHealth Care philosophies, policies and procedures.
  • Assists with orientation and training of new team members, students and nursing staff regarding specimen submission and specimen processing.
  • Assures effective communication between shifts with co-workers and leadership regarding workflow, specimen processing, and customer issues.
  • Actively participates in quality improvement processes, identifies workflow inefficiencies and works in partnership with management to improve operations.
  • Investigates and assists in troubleshooting problems and assures appropriate communication with clients.
  • Serves as a resource to the technical laboratory staff in problem-solving activities related to specimen collection and processing activities.
  • Performs assigned job functions in a fiscally responsible manner.

 

Qualifications:

High School Diploma / GED

Associate's Degree preferred 

0-2 years of experience

ASCP Certified MLT, ASCP Certified HT preferred 

 

Flexible with work assignments, willingly assisting team members throughout the lab.
